Uncommon variant of the Scalloped Night Heron identified
In a significant discovery for the field of herpetology, the Aesculapian snake has been confirmed in the Wetterau District, a region located in the German state of Hesse. This large European snake species, known for its non-venomous nature, has been detected in two new locations: the town of Ortenberg and the municipality of Stockheim.
The Aesculapian snake, which can grow up to 180 centimeters long, is a protected species in Germany and is classified as "strongly endangered." Until now, only two isolated occurrences of the species had been known in southern Hesse, specifically in the Rheingau-Taunus district and the Odenwald district.
The lower nature conservation authority of the Wetterau district now has evidence of the Aesculapian snake in the region, making its recent appearance noteworthy. The discovery was reported by the Wetterau Association for Nature Conservation.
These snakes are skilled climbers and can move through trees by gliding. They feed on small mammals and birds, killing them by constriction. Interestingly, they lay their eggs in places like manure and compost heaps.
All sightings and observations of Aesculapian snakes can be reported online via the HLNUG reporting portal. Residents of the Wetterau District are encouraged to keep an eye out for this rare species and report any sightings to help with ongoing research and conservation efforts.
It is important to note that the Aesculapian snake is non-venomous and harmless to humans. Despite its size, it poses no threat to people. However, it is crucial to respect all wildlife and maintain a safe distance from any wild animals encountered.
As the Aesculapian snake continues to be detected in new locations, it serves as a reminder of the diverse and fascinating wildlife that exists within Germany. The discovery in the Wetterau District is a significant addition to our understanding of this rare species and its habitat.
