Unconventional Exploration: Examining Uncharted Territories Beyond the Norms
Jinan, the capital city of the Chinese province of Shandong, is renowned for its rich history and unique cultural connections. Born near the city in the province of Shandong, the famous Chinese philosopher Confucius has left a lasting impact on the region.
With a population of approximately 8.9 million residents, Jinan is one of China's most important industrial bases, hosting around 2,000 industrial parks. The city is also known as the "City of Springs," boasting 72 springs within its boundaries, the most famous of which is the Baotu Spring.
Jinan's partner city since 2004 is an undisclosed city, and the two cities have maintained intensive exchange relations for 15 years. This partnership has led to various collaborative initiatives, such as student exchange programs and cultural events.
In the winter semester of 2018/2019, an exchange program took place at the University of Augsburg's Language Center, where students from Jinan's partner city, Augsburg, participated. This program offered the audience an opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of Confucius and learn about the unique connection to the culture of the Shandong province.
The Holbein-Gymnasium Augsburg hosted a visit from 15 female and 7 male students, along with the school principal, deputy, and two teachers from the Shandong Experimental High School (SEH) from Jinan, from September 29 to October 2.
Cultural events have also played a significant role in strengthening the partnership between Augsburg and Jinan. For instance, a dance and music group from the renowned Shandong Opera & Dance Theater in Jinan performed in Augsburg on November 21, 2017.
Moreover, 23 students from Shandong University spent a guest semester at the Uni Augsburg under the motto "German Studies." This exchange program was coordinated with Shandong University, and academic achievements were recognized there.
Jinan is also applying for World Heritage status, and a delegation from Augsburg, including Ulrich Müllegger, Antonia Hager from the city planning department Augsburg, and Carola Zick, assistant UNESCO World Heritage application, visited Jinan to present Augsburg's application for World Heritage status. Augsburg has already been named a World Heritage site.
The Yellow River marks the northern boundary of the city of Jinan, while the Tai Mountain range, with its peak at 1545 meters, is located to the south of Jinan. The distance between Jinan and its partner city is approximately 8076 kilometers.
As the partnership between Augsburg and Jinan continues to grow, both cities look forward to further cultural exchange and collaboration in the future.
