Rado Unveils Futuristic Diastar Watch Inspired by "Ad Astra"

British designer Tej Chauhan has collaborated with Swiss watchmaker Rado to create a striking, futuristic take on the Diastar Original, a 1960s design. The new watch, inspired by AI futurescapes and the moonbase and gold space helmets seen in the movie Ad Astra, is now available for purchase.

The watch, which runs on Rado's R764 automatic calibre, an ETA movement with 80 hours of power reserve, is made from Rado's proprietary Ceramos, an alloy of ceramic and metal. This material gives the watch a sleek, modern look, while also ensuring it is water-resistant to 100m.

The design of the watch is reminiscent of Brad Pitt's space suit in Ad Astra, with the watch not dissimilar from the carapace of the suit. The strap, made from pillow-shaped rubber, resembles space suits, and the underside of the strap reads 'TC Souvenirs of The Near Future'.

The dial design is inspired by science fiction, with each day's abbreviation appearing in a different bright colour. The indexes from nine to 12 on the dial are marked out in a bright blue shade, referred to as 'the party quarter'. Tej Chauhan even created a unique typeface for the date and weekday displays on the watch.

The watch is engraved on the case back to mark the special edition, and is available for purchase from rado.com, priced at £2,100. This isn't the first time brands have drawn on unusual sources for watch designs. For example, several brands have taken inspiration from the liveries of Formula 1 or MotoGP helmets, while Casio makes a watch inspired by a Samurai's kabuto, and Gerald Genta styled the Royal Oak's octagonal, bolted bezel on an antique diving helmet.

In a previous collaboration for the Diastar Original, Jasper Morrison designed a watch based on the golden space helmet worn by Brad Pitt in Ad Astra. Tej Chauhan's second collaborative project with Rado continues this futuristic watch aesthetic, making the Diastar watch a must-have for any watch enthusiast looking for a unique, modern timepiece.
