Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un recently gathered in Beijing for a historic summit. The meeting, which took place at the Great Hall of the People, marks a significant moment in East Asia's geopolitical landscape.

The trio's discussion focused on various issues, with one of the key points being a potential increase in gas supplies from Russia to China. The two nations have agreed to a new pipeline deal that could sustain China's energy needs for the next 30 years. This move strengthens the already robust relationship between Russia and China, with Putin expressing "unprecedentedly high relations" with Xi.

The summit also offers clues to Putin's intentions amidst Russia's ongoing three-and-a-half-year war with Ukraine. Reports suggest that Kim Jong Un has supplied over 15,000 troops to support Putin's war efforts.

The diplomatic clout of Chinese President Xi Jinping with authoritarian regimes is particularly notable, especially as U.S. President Donald Trump's isolationist policies strain Washington's alliances. Xi's ability to bring together leaders like Putin and Kim underscores China's growing influence in the region.

Potential closer defense relations among the three countries is another significant outcome of the summit. A pact signed by Russia and North Korea, and a similar alliance between China and Pyongyang, hint at a potential shift in the region's security dynamics.

Before crossing to China, Kim Jong Un visited a missile laboratory, fuelling speculation about North Korea's nuclear capabilities. The 'Victory Day' parade in Beijing is geared toward showcasing North Korea's status as a nuclear power.

The meeting comes at a time when tensions are high over China's military parade, with Iran's leader expected to attend on Wednesday. Kim Jong Un's armored special train was en route to the Chinese capital, carrying his entourage, including Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui, who has been involved in Pyongyang's diplomacy on weapons developments for over two decades.

Putin also criticized the eastward expansion of NATO and European Security at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Tianjin, further emphasizing the growing rift between the West and Eastern powers. Xi, in turn, criticized "hegemonism and power politics" in a gathering of non-Western leaders, underscoring China's stance on global affairs.

Putin's visit to Beijing and potential meeting with Xi and Kim may offer further insights into the strategic alliances being forged in East Asia. The summit, therefore, serves as a reminder of the complex and ever-evolving geopolitical landscape in the region.
