"Unfortunate performance": Zverev encounters another setback at a major tennis tournament

Alexander Zverev, the world number three, suffered a disappointing loss in the third round of the US Open, marking his earliest exit from a Grand Slam tournament since 2018. The German tennis star was defeated by Felix Auger-Aliassime in a gruelling four-set match that lasted 3 hours and 48 minutes.

Zverev's loss came as a surprise, considering his consistent performances at the US Open. In his last four appearances, he had reached at least the quarterfinals. However, this year, he exited in the pre-quarterfinals.

The match was closely contested, with Zverev leading 4-3 in the first set before losing it 6-4. He also had the opportunity to lead 2-0 in sets, but failed to convert a set point in the tiebreak of the second set. The set ultimately went to a tiebreak, which Auger-Aliassime won 7-9.

The decisive moment of the match came in the second set when a net cord bounced over Zverev's racket, allowing Auger-Aliassime to level the set. From there, the Canadian player gained momentum and went on to win the next two sets 6-7 (7-9), 4-6, 4-6.

Despite the loss, Zverev was quick to attribute his defeat to his overall poor play. He mentioned that his back, which has been bothering him for weeks, was not the reason for his loss. Zverev stated, "I think I just played poorly today. I didn't play my best tennis, and that's why I lost."

Zverev's only real highlight of the year was reaching the final at the Australian Open, which he lost to Jannik Sinner. His collaboration with Toni Nadal, Rafael Nadal's uncle and successful coach, remains uncertain.

Despite the early exit from the US Open, Zverev has a chance to bounce back at the Laver Cup, where he will represent Team Europe from September 19 to 21, 2025. His next tournament will be the Laver Cup, making it an opportunity for him to regain his form before the end of the season.

Zverev, however, did not want to use his physical ailments as an excuse for his loss. He emphasised that he will take some time to rest and recover before focusing on his next tournament. With his high ranking and potential, fans can expect to see Zverev back on the court soon, aiming for a strong finish to the season.
