Man Shot and Killed by Off-Duty NYPD Officer in Manhattan
In a tragic turn of events, a 30-year-old man lost his life after being shot by an off-duty NYPD officer in Manhattan on Sunday evening. The incident occurred near West 173rd Street and Amsterdam Avenue in Washington Heights, around 9:45 p.m.
According to details provided by the deputy chief at a press briefing early Monday, the off-duty officer was standing outside a residential building when he was approached by two men on two mopeds. One of the men asked the officer if he knew a certain person's name, and then pulled out a gun.
In response, the officer took out his own gun and fired, striking the man several times. The man was rushed to Harlem Hospital, but was later pronounced dead. A 9mm loaded gun was recovered at the scene of the shooting.
The other man fled the scene on his moped, and the identity of the man who was shot has not been officially disclosed yet, as officials are working to notify his family. The off-duty officer who fired the shots was taken to a local hospital for minor injuries.
This shooting marks the second fatal NYPD shooting since Friday. The NYPD is currently investigating the incident and asking for any witnesses to come forward with information.
