United Nations: Baerbock Assumes Presidency of General Assembly

New UN General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock Takes Office

In a historic moment, Annalena Baerbock was sworn in as the President of the United Nations General Assembly on September 1st, 2025, in New York. The 44-year-old Green politician from Germany, who previously served as Federal Foreign Minister until May, received an overwhelming majority of 167 out of 193 possible votes in a secret ballot requested by Russia.

Baerbock's election to the post marked a significant milestone, as she is only the fifth woman to hold this position. During her swearing-in ceremony, she placed her hand on the original UN Charter, symbolising her commitment to upholding the organisation's principles.

Philemon Yang, the former Prime Minister of Cameroon, bid farewell as the previous President of the UN General Assembly, handing the gavel - used to open and close sessions - to Baerbock. In her first session as President, Baerbock tested the gavel and expressed gratitude and honour for leading the UN General Assembly next year.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed his pleasure at working with Baerbock, praising her dedication to the United Nations' mission. In her statement, Baerbock emphasised the need to show the world why the UN is still relevant, promising to work exclusively in the interest of the organisation.

As the President of the UN General Assembly, Baerbock will lead sessions and manage agendas and timetables. She also plans to deliver a speech during her first session, outlining her vision for the upcoming year. The term of the UN General Assembly President lasts for one year, and the upcoming General Debate in late September will include heads of state from around the world.

While Baerbock's election was met with widespread support, there were reports of a Russian interference attempt during the voting process. Despite this, Baerbock's election was considered fair and transparent, and she is expected to make a significant contribution to the UN during her tenure.

As Baerbock begins her new role, the world watches with anticipation, eager to see how she will lead the UN General Assembly and shape the organisation's future.
