United Nations Establishes Expert Panel to Assess Nuclear War Impact

The United Nations has established an independent expert panel to assess the potential impact of a nuclear war. The panel, which was set up by a U.N. General Assembly resolution last December, aims to influence nuclear states by demonstrating, through science, that a nuclear war would lead to the annihilation of the human race.

The panel consists of 21 experts in various fields, including nuclear and radiation science, medicine, and agriculture. One of the co-deputy chairs of the panel is Masao Tomonaga, an 82-year-old atomic bomb survivor and doctor from Nagasaki.

The panel's first meeting was held from September 5 to 6, and the meetings will be held on a regular basis, every three months. The meetings will be conducted by the seven working groups under the scientific committee assessing the impacts of nuclear warfare. Unfortunately, the names of these working groups are not available in the current search results.

During the meetings, the panel will conduct research, including examining existing papers. The research will focus on various fields, including nuclear and radiation science, medicine, and agriculture. Masao Tomonaga stated that it's impossible to realize a world without nuclear weapons without abandoning nuclear deterrence policies.

The panel's final report is scheduled to be compiled by autumn 2027. The report is expected to provide valuable insights into the devastating consequences of a nuclear war and serve as a call to action for nuclear states to work towards disarmament.

The establishment of this expert panel is a significant step towards promoting global peace and preventing the use of nuclear weapons. The panel's work will be closely watched by the international community, and its findings are expected to have a profound impact on nuclear disarmament efforts.
