United Nations General Assembly officially confers presidency upon Baerbock
New German Foreign Minister Elected as President of the UN General Assembly
Annalena Baerbock, the former German Foreign Minister, has been elected as the President of the UN General Assembly. The news was announced in June, and Baerbock officially took up her post in New York earlier this month.
At her swearing-in ceremony, Baerbock placed her hand on the original UN Charter, symbolising her commitment to upholding the organisation's principles. Her term as President will last one year.
Baerbock, who is 44 years old, will chair the General Assembly's sessions and manage proceedings. She will also set agendas for the General Assembly, including the General Debate in late September.
During her presidency, Baerbock will address all 193 member states of the UN to demonstrate the organisation's relevance. She has emphasised the UN as the only entity that can bring all countries together, acting as an honest mediator and unifying force for all member states.
Baerbock's election was not without controversy, as the Russian government attempted to disrupt her election. Despite this, she was able to secure the necessary votes to take up the position.
Baerbock is the fifth woman to hold the position of President of the UN General Assembly. She has pledged to work exclusively in the interest of the United Nations and UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed his eagerness to work with Baerbock to find global solutions to global problems. Yang, Baerbock's predecessor and the former Prime Minister of Cameroon, bid farewell to the position and officially handed over the gavel to Baerbock.
Baerbock's first session as President was scheduled for later in the day, during which she planned to deliver a speech. The role of President of the UN General Assembly is primarily ceremonial, but Baerbock's leadership is expected to be decisive and forward-thinking.
As a Green politician, Baerbock brings a unique perspective to the position. She served as Federal Foreign Minister of Germany until May, where she focused on climate change and sustainability. Baerbock's presidency is expected to prioritise these issues on the global stage.
Yang wished Baerbock "to lead the General Assembly to new heights." With Baerbock's election, the UN General Assembly enters a new era of leadership, one that is committed to finding solutions to the world's most pressing problems and bringing unity to the global community.
