United States Ambassador is called to appear by French authorities due to his statements alleging France's promotion of antisemitism.
In a dramatic turn of events, US Ambassador to France Charles Kushner has accused the French authorities of inadequately combating rising antisemitic acts in France. In an open letter to President Emmanuel Macron, Kushner highlighted instances of antisemitic incidents, including assaults, defaced synagogues, and vandalized Jewish-owned businesses.
The French Foreign Ministry swiftly responded, finding Kushner's allegations about antisemitism in France to be "unacceptable." The ministry's statement also indicated that Kushner's accusations interfere in France's internal affairs and run counter to international law, citing the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
The French government, deeply regretful of the rise in antisemitic acts since October 7, 2023, summoned Kushner to appear at its headquarters in Paris on Monday. The French authorities are fully mobilized against the increase in antisemitic acts, and the French Foreign Ministry stated that such acts are intolerable in France.
Kushner, in his letter, urged Macron to ease criticism of Israel and address antisemitism in France, expressing his willingness to cooperate with Macron and other French officials to forge a plan to address the problem. He also noted that antisemitic incidents were reported even at preschools in France.
The dispute between France and Charles Kushner comes after French President Emmanuel Macron dismissed accusations by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The accusations dismissed by Macron were that France's plan to recognize a Palestinian state is contributing to antisemitism.
Meanwhile, Turkey's TRT launched a Hebrew-language digital platform, and dozens of boats sailed Istanbul's Bosphorus in solidarity with Gaza amid confirmed famine, where 289 Palestinians, including 115 children, have died due to the ongoing crisis.
As the situation unfolds, both parties are called upon to engage in constructive dialogue to address the issue of antisemitism in France and maintain the trust between allies.
