United States initiates fresh assault on Nord Stream 2 pipeline project
The construction of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, which connects Russia and Germany, is set to resume this weekend, despite strong opposition from the United States. The U.S. Ambassador to Germany, Robin Quinville, has called for a temporary halt to the pipeline's construction, citing it as a political tool of the Kremlin to bypass Ukraine and divide Europe.
Quinville made this call in an interview with Handelsblatt (Monday edition), stating that a moratorium on the pipeline construction would send a clear signal that Europe will not tolerate Russia's continued malicious behavior. The U.S. Ambassador believes the pipeline to be a threat to Ukraine's economic interests and European energy security.
The Nord Stream 2 project has been controversial since its inception. Last year, construction was suspended due to U.S. sanctions. The Senate and House of Representatives in the United States are now aiming to pass a second sanctions law against Nord Stream 2, with both Democratic and Republican parties supporting the move.
Washington firmly opposes the Nord Stream 2 project, viewing it as a means for Russia to exert greater control over European energy supplies. The U.S. Embassy in Berlin has also called for a halt to the pipeline's construction, echoing Quinville's concerns.
The resumption of construction comes at a time when Europe is grappling with energy security issues, particularly in light of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The pipeline is intended to double the capacity of the existing Nord Stream 1 pipeline, delivering natural gas directly from Russia to Germany without transiting through Ukraine.
Despite the calls for sanctions and the opposition from the U.S., it remains unclear whether the construction of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline will be halted. The project is a significant investment for both Russia and Germany, and its completion could have far-reaching implications for European energy politics.
