University of Arizona (ASU) Fosters AI Development Through Collaboration with OpenAI

Arizona State University (ASU) is making waves in the higher education sector by partnering with OpenAI, a leading artificial intelligence (AI) company. This departure from many universities' policies of banning, penalizing, or discouraging AI technology marks a significant step forward in ASU's commitment to embracing technology.

The partnership is the first of its kind in higher education, giving ASU access to ChatGPT Enterprise, the premium version of OpenAI's technology. This collaboration provides ASU with data privacy advantages and allows for increased processing power, making it possible to input more data and derive more accurate insights.

ASU is focusing on using AI in three distinct areas: enhancing education, environmental data analysis, and research. In the realm of education, ASU offers a variety of AI trainings for educators to learn more about the technology. One English professor at ASU is conducting studies on whether AI helps students in introductory writing classes improve.

To ensure a well-rounded approach, ASU has put together a faculty committee with deep knowledge about technology for the AI partnership. Student voice is also important in the AI partnership process at ASU, as the university accepts proposals from faculty to implement innovative uses of ChatGPT Enterprise.

In the field of environmental science, ASU is using AI to help make sense of environmental data gathered from satellites. The university aims to study these uses to provide research-backed best practice guidance for ASU staff and students.

Kyle Bowen, deputy chief information officer at ASU Enterprise Technology, emphasises the importance of connecting with diverse university stakeholders when partnering with AI. He also assures that work conducted by ASU faculty members will not be part of the training data used to improve AI technologies.

ASU is also introducing Sora, a video version of ChatGPT, which educators should be aware of. Through this collaboration, Arizona State University aims to guide the future of AI technologies, leading the way in AI adoption in higher education.
