Unofficial Report - Migration Across Hohen Rhön Border on August 25, 25

On Saturday, August 30, 2025, and again on Saturday, September 20, 2025, history enthusiasts are invited to embark on an enlightening journey through time at the "Dreiländereck" pension in Birx, Am Sportplatz 7. The event commences at 10:00 AM.

This unique hike offers a rare opportunity to explore the panoramic vistas of the Thuringian Forest, Grabfeld, and Wasserkuppe, while delving into the fascinating history of the inner German border. The hike will take approximately 5 kilometers and is suitable for those seeking an educational and engaging outdoor experience.

Eyewitness Jens Graf will guide participants through this historical journey, providing valuable insights into the life of Birx residents in the restricted area and the illegal small border traffic that took place between East and West. Graf will also share intriguing stories about old border stones, forgotten barbed wire, and concrete post border installations from centuries past.

As part of the hike, participants will have the chance to view and discuss documents and photos that offer a glimpse into this hidden chapter of German history. The hike will also provide a unique opportunity to learn about the Housebook, which details entry permits and security strips for the restricted area during the inner German border.

Birx, located at the tripoint of Bavaria, Hesse, and Thuringia, was directly at the inner German border from 1945. Remnants of the border can still be found in Birx, 35 years after reunification.

The hike is not without a small fee of 10 Euro per person, which covers the costs of organising the event. Registration for the hike can be done by phone at 0171-2029190.

Jens Graf, who has maintained contact with local residents from villages such as Krásná Lípa (Schönlinde), Chřibská (Kreibitz), and Jetřichovice (Dittersbach), will provide a personal and engaging account of life in the border region. These villages, located in the border area where local police and community interactions occurred, offer a unique perspective on the illegal border traffic that took place.

Join us for this extraordinary journey through time and uncover the secrets of the inner German border in Birx. Additional hikes can be arranged by appointment for those who are unable to attend on the specified dates.
