Unpaid Minimum Wages Prevalent per HZA-MS Standards

In a bid to ensure fair employment practices and compliance with labour laws, the Münster Customs Office carried out an inspection on taxi drivers in the city on May 15, 2025. The focus of the inspection was on three taxi companies – Taxi Münster, Taxi Zentrale Münster, and Taxi Münsterland – suspected of wage dumping.

The inspection aimed to verify the employment status and income of the taxi drivers, as well as to examine the non-remittance of social security contributions. The customs office also checked the residence permits of non-EU workers among the drivers.

During the inspection, 37 taxi drivers were examined at four control points in the city. The drivers' statements were compared with the business records of the affected taxi companies to ensure accuracy and compliance with the minimum wage laws.

If minimum wage violations are confirmed, the companies will not only face significant fines but will also be required to back pay the social security contributions that were not remitted due to the minimum wage underpayment.

Besides minimum wage violations, the inspections also investigated social benefit fraud. This involves employees concealing their employment status from the job center, which is a serious offence.

The Münster Customs Office routinely conducts inspections in the transport industry to maintain fair employment practices and ensure compliance with labour laws. The current inspection is part of their ongoing commitment to protecting workers' rights and promoting a fair and equitable work environment in Münster.
