Unraveling Insights from the 2008 Terrorist Siege in Mumbai

In a thought-provoking episode of the Military Writers Guild's (MWI) Urban Warfare Project Podcast, John Spencer delves into the urban warfare lessons that can be extracted from the 2008 Mumbai attacks in India. The lecture, delivered on December 15, 2021, was part of the NATO Science and Technology Office's "Basics of Complex Modern Urban Functions and Characteristics" course.

On November 26, 2008, a small group of ten Pakistan-based terrorists launched a series of coordinated attacks across multiple sites in Mumbai, a city with a population of twenty million. The preparation and execution of these attacks were led by Lashkar-e-Taiba commander Hafiz Saeed and operationally directed by Lashkar's chief military commander Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi. The attacks were planned and executed with the precision of military special operations forces, causing widespread chaos and fear.

This devastating event, often referred to as India's 9/11, left an indelible mark on the global security landscape. After the attacks, "Mumbai-style attack" became shorthand for a specific threat that security authorities must be prepared for.

In his lecture, Spencer discusses the intricacies of the 2008 Mumbai attacks, providing valuable insights into urban warfare tactics and strategies. The podcast episode is now available on various platforms, including Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, Spotify, TuneIn, and your favourite podcast app.
