Unrest escalates following the withdrawal of social media restrictions, culminating in the immediate resignation of the Nepalese Prime Minister
The Kathmandu Post has reported that the current events in Nepal are centred around trust, corruption, and a generation that refuses to stay silent. This comes as the nation grapples with a series of protests, violence, and the sudden blocking of several social media sites.
On Friday, the Himalayan nation blocked popular platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, and X, sparking concerns about freedom of expression. This move follows a nine-month ban on TikTok, which was lifted last year after the platform agreed to comply with Nepali regulations. However, the government has also cut access to 26 platforms that failed to register as required and establish a local liaison in Nepal.
The protests in Nepal are primarily focused on demands for democracy, the reinstatement of the dissolved parliament, and opposition to the absolute rule of the king. Significant figures and groups connected with these protests include the Seven-Party Alliance and Maoist groups, which played crucial roles in challenging the monarchy and mobilising the population.
The clashes between protesters and security forces have resulted in a significant number of injuries. Approximately 400 people were injured during the unrest, including over 100 police. Reports suggest that live ammunition was used against protesters on Monday, leading to the tragic deaths of nearly 20 individuals. 17 deaths were reported in Kathmandu, the capital, and two in the eastern district of Sunsari.
The United Nations has demanded a swift and transparent investigation into the incidents, calling for accountability and respect for human rights. Amnesty International has also expressed concern over the use of force against peaceful protesters and urged the Nepalese authorities to ensure the safety and protection of all those exercising their right to freedom of expression and assembly.
Gen Z in Nepal, who grew up with smartphones, global trends, and promises of a federal, prosperous Nepal, view digital freedom as personal freedom. Videos contrasting the struggles of ordinary Nepalis with the children of politicians flaunting luxury goods and expensive vacations have gone viral on TikTok, which was not blocked, highlighting the importance of these platforms in voicing the people's concerns.
As the situation in Nepal continues to unfold, the international community watches closely, hoping for a peaceful resolution and a return to the democratic process.
