Unsafe Material Handling: Storage of Chemical Containers in a Public Parking Area on a Main Road

On Easter Sunday, March 31, 2024, at 1:41 PM, the Volunteer Fire Department of Bedburg-Hau was called to action following a hazardous materials incident on a parking lot at Triftstraße in Hau.

Led by Deputy Fire Chief Tobias Aschemann, a team of 11 firefighters swiftly responded to the scene. Upon arrival, they secured the area and conducted an initial reconnaissance with a team in self-contained breathing apparatus.

The incident involved unknown hazardous substances that had been dumped on the parking lot. The containers holding these substances were found to contain ammonia solution, chemicals for water treatment, oils, and cleaning agents.

With the assistance of the on-call duty officer of the local authority of Bedburg-Hau, the hazardous substances were secured and removed. The containers were then sealed, preventing any risk of contamination to the surroundings.

The Volunteer Fire Department of Bedburg-Hau strongly condemns the reckless disposal of chemicals in nature. The safely disposal of such hazardous substances can be done through the hazardous waste collection service of the Klever Abfallwirtschaft GmbH.

The operation to secure the hazardous materials incident at Triftstraße in Hau lasted 30 minutes. The removed hazardous substances will now be disposed of properly.
