Unseasonable Warmth Persists Through Late Summer's Blustery Weather

The upcoming week promises a varied weather experience across the country, with some regions basking in sunshine while others contend with showers and cooler temperatures.

On Thursday, the sun is expected to shine throughout most of the country, except for western Austria where a disturbance zone brings dense clouds and some rain. The wind is often light to moderate from the east to the south, and can be stronger in foehn regions and the south. Morning temperatures range from 8 to 15 degrees Celsius, and daytime highs will range from 23 to 28 degrees Celsius.

Friday sees a change in the weather pattern. The wind strengthens to moderate to strong in the east, and a passing disturbance brings numerous clouds and some showers, particularly to the north and east. On the brighter side, the sun also makes an appearance in some parts of the country. In Vorarlberg and Tyrol, the day starts mostly sunny, but the cloud cover increases from the west and the likelihood of showers increases. Morning temperatures should range from 10 to 17 degrees Celsius, and daytime highs should range from 22 to 27 degrees Celsius.

Looking ahead to the weekend, the weather is friendlier and sunnier in the west and south, but local showers are possible there as well.

As we move into next week, Tuesday presents a threat of persistent rain across the country, particularly in the west. There is an increased risk of heavy showers and thunderstorms on Tuesday. By contrast, Monday offers very sunny weather for the north, south, and east of the country, with some cumulus clouds forming in the mountains in the afternoon.

The severe precipitation events in the Alps that are intensified by climate change are expected to become particularly more intense in autumn and winter. By mid-century, the strongest single-day precipitation events in winter are expected to become about 10% more intense, and this figure rises to about 20% by the end of the century. Overall, heavy rainfall events will likely become more frequent and intense during all seasons but especially in autumn and winter.

In summary, the weather in September is changeable but warm, with a late summer-like feel. Prepare for a mix of sunshine, showers, and warm temperatures, with a higher risk of heavy rain and thunderstorms towards the middle of next week.
