Unsolicited Work Proposals via Messenger: Stay Alert for Deceptive Opportunities

In a cautionary tale from the Meissen district, a woman has fallen victim to a work-from-home job scam. The incident, which involved an alleged U.S. company named Eva Commerce, serves as a reminder of the potential risks associated with job offers received via unconventional channels.

The woman, seeking a better work-life balance with flexible hours, applied for the job on reputable platforms. The job offer promised easy extra income by forwarding orders for well-known companies such as Wayfair, eBay, TikTok, or Zalando. However, the offer was a scam, and the woman lost a significant amount of money as a result.

The scam originated from an attractive job offer received via WhatsApp from Eva Commerce. The woman was initially credited with an initial commission of 127 Euros after an orientation phase. This initial payment increased her trust, as advised by legal advisor Anett Wagner.

However, things soon took a turn for the worse. The woman was asked to pay upfront for packages, resulting in her investing over 30,000 Euros within a few days. The job offer's online work account showed a balance of over 195,000 USD, but the scammers demanded 38,000 Euros for "release" when she tried to withdraw the money.

The Saxony Consumer Center has previously warned against job offers received via messaging apps or SMS. Wagner, the legal advisor, warns that professional employers do not communicate via messaging apps and highlights other warning signs such as unrealistic income promises, upfront payments, or payments in cryptocurrencies.

The Saxony Consumer Center advises caution when receiving job offers via messaging apps or SMS. They have highlighted this case of fraud, warning against such job offers received via unconventional channels. The woman has since filed a police report and sought legal assistance.

It is essential to exercise caution when considering job offers, especially those received via unconventional channels. Always verify the legitimacy of the employer, and be wary of any requests for upfront payments or unusual payment methods. If something seems too good to be true, it probably is.
