In the midst of the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, two animal shelters in the affected regions have reported incidents of distress and injury among their residents.

On the night of 2-3 September, Russian forces launched an attack on Ukraine, employing 502 drones, 24 air-to-surface, and maritime surface-to-surface missiles. The shelters, Pokynutyi Anhel in Khmelnytskyi Oblast and Dai Lapu in Znamianka, Kirovohrad Oblast, were not spared from the attack's aftermath.

Pokynutyi Anhel reported that the animals were terrified during the attack, with some injuring themselves on the bars of their enclosures as they tried to escape. The shelter was hit by missile debris, and a surveillance camera captured the moment of the strike. Fortunately, the injuries sustained were not critical.

In a statement made on Instagram, Pokynutyi Anhel shared that last night and this morning were particularly distressing due to the explosions and the extreme stress experienced by the dogs. The shelter is yet to release any information about the personnel working at the zoo veterinary facility during the night of September 2 to 3 amid the Russian attack on Ukraine.

At Dai Lapu shelter in Znamianka, the dogs were also affected by the attack, although specific details about the impact were not provided. One dog at the shelter died from stress due to the attack, and the rest of the dogs were reportedly frightened. The statement from Dai Lapu about the incident was also made on Instagram.

This unfortunate incident underscores the far-reaching effects of the ongoing conflict, even affecting the most vulnerable members of society, including animals. Both shelters continue to provide care and support to their residents, working tirelessly to ensure their wellbeing amidst the chaos.
