In a chilling courtroom drama that captivated the world, Luka Magnotta, a bisexual porn star, was convicted in 2014 for the gruesome murder of Chinese student Jun Lin in Canada.

Magnotta, who claimed to be a private person, had posted swathes of pictures and information about himself online. Despite stating he did not want to be interviewed, he was accused of horrifically chopping up Lin and performing sick sex acts with the body before sending parts to politicians in the post.

On the day of his arrest, Magnotta was wearing a flat cap, leather jacket, tracksuit bottoms, blue eye shadow, and foundation make-up. He was arrested in Berlin in an internet cafe where he was reportedly googling his own crime.

Magnotta's trial was a tense affair. He appeared sullen, with sunken eyes and an expressionless face. He refused to let the investigators speak to his lawyer or reveal who he was. When asked about the pictures of him posing on a bedspread with kittens, he claimed they were digitally altered.

The jury saw through Magnotta's lawyer's attempts to suggest he was not guilty due to mental illness and convicted him. Magnotta was wanted for a gruesome sadistic murder, and his high-pitch voice was strained and he seemed anxious during the proceedings.

The email Magnotta sent to a journalist using the alias John Kilbride became crucial evidence that the murder was premeditated. The email was recorded as "malicious communication," but no action could be taken as Magnotta had left the country.

Magnotta was also accused of committing sick animal killings, including feeding a kitten to a python and suffocating two others in a plastic bag. He admitted to receiving death threats about the videos he posted online of him killing kittens.

In December 2014, Magnotta was given a mandatory life sentence with eligibility for parole after 25 years. The conviction brought a sense of closure to the family of Jun Lin, but the memory of the chilling case continues to haunt those who followed the trial.

Interestingly, some serial killers, including Magnotta, have a history of hurting animals as children. This pattern, seen in the likes of Albert DeSalvo, Edmund Kemper, Jeffrey Dahmer, David Berkowitz, Ted Bundy, Andrew Cunanan, and Stephen Griffiths, raises questions about the psychological factors that contribute to such violent behaviour.
