Unveiling the captivating tale of Torremolinos and Eurovision: an exploration of the planned festival celebration
In the sun-soaked town of Torremolinos, a rich history with the Eurovision Song Contest remains largely untold. A proposed host for the festival in 1980, Torremolinos came incredibly close to hosting Europe's largest music event.
The journey begins in 1968, when Massiel, a well-known Eurovision follower, graced the screen in the movie "Days of Old Color". This curious connection with Eurovision was revitalized in 1980, as Torremolinos found itself in the running to host the contest.
The town's bid was bolstered by the support of Cristina Galbó, Andrés Resino, Gonzalo Canás, and José Manuel Gorospe, who were all part of the "Days of Old Color" cast. Pedro Olea, the director of "A Man Called Autumn" and "Days of Old Color", was also a supporter of the town's ambition.
However, the path to hosting Eurovision 1980 was not straightforward. The organization of the contest was initially entrusted to Television Espana (TVE) and other top-finishing countries from the previous year. But Israel, the winner of the previous edition, did not participate in 1980.
The contest was ultimately moved from Israel due to security concerns, and the 1980 contest was held in The Hague, Netherlands, not Torremolinos. The reason why Torremolinos was not chosen remains unclear.
Fast forward to 2022, and Torremolinos' connection with Eurovision continues. Chanel, a contender for this year's contest, is one of the favourites to win. If Chanel does indeed triumph, Torremolinos may once again find itself in the running to host the Eurovision Song Contest.
Torremolinos' near miss with hosting Eurovision in 1980 serves as a testament to the town's enduring love for music and its potential to host Europe's biggest music event. As we eagerly await the results of Eurovision 2022, let's not forget the sun-soaked town that came so close to hosting the contest 42 years ago.
"Days of Old Color" premiered in 1967 and is now available on the website Play from this Friday, allowing us to relive the era when Torremolinos' connection with Eurovision first began. The last victory for Spain in Eurovision occurred in 1969 with Salomé in a four-way tie. Will Chanel and Torremolinos write a new chapter in Eurovision history this year? Only time will tell.
