Unveiling the fresh offerings from Red Shield (Escudo Rojo)
In the world of Chilean wine, two new releases have caught the attention of connoisseurs - the 2022 Baronesa P. and the Escudo Rojo Gran Reserva Chardonnay 2023.
The Baronesa P., Escudo Rojo's most prestigious wine, is a five-variety blend created in honour of the late Baroness herself. The grapes for this vintage are sourced from the alluvial, gravelly soils of the Maipo Valley and the clay soils of the Colchagua Valley. The wine showcases textbook Maipo Cabernet flavors of blackcurrant and morello cherry, with notes of rosemary, lavender, graphite, and cedar. Cool air tumbling down off the Andes in the afternoon brings freshness, poise, and finesse to this vintage. The 2022 Baronesa P. is primarily made up of Cabernet Sauvignon (83%), with smaller amounts of Cabernet Franc (5%) and Syrah (1%), and the remainder is produced from Carmenère (6%) and Petit Verdot (5%). The wine spent 15 months in oak, with just over half of it being new oak.
On the other hand, the Escudo Rojo Gran Reserva Chardonnay 2023 is sourced from the Casablanca Valley. This Chardonnay offers rich flavors of passion fruit, orange blossom, and zesty grapefruit. Six months in French oak (50% new) add layers of toasted hazelnuts and creme brulee to the wine. The Escudo Rojo Gran Reserva 2022, primarily made up of Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenère (87% each), is full-bodied, blue-fruited, and dense, with alluring hints of bay leaf, nuts, and spice. This vintage spent 12 months in oak, with 25% of it being new oak.
Escudo Rojo, established by Baroness Philippine de Rothschild in 1999, is a winery that prides itself on creating exceptional wines. The name Escudo Rojo translates to 'red shield', which is the Spanish translation of Baron Philippe de Rothschild's family name. The Escudo Rojo Gran Reserva Chardonnay 2023 has a long finish, while the 2022 Baronesa P. displays a long and elegant aftertaste. Both wines are a testament to the quality and expertise that Escudo Rojo brings to the world of Chilean winemaking.
