Unyielding Requests from Russia Regarding Ukraine Opposed by Silina
In a significant development, a meeting of the Coalition of the Willing was held last weekend to discuss practical preparations and support for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders who will meet with US President Donald Trump this week. The Coalition, a group of countries ready to contribute to Ukraine, aims to provide much-needed assistance in the country's ongoing conflict with Russia.
The talks were preceded by a meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin in Anchorage, Alaska on Friday. The exact details of their discussion remain undisclosed, but Trump stated that Ukrainian President Zelensky has the ability to end the war with Russia almost immediately, if he chooses to.
Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina (New Unity) participated in the Coalition of the Willing meeting, expressing her concerns about the demands by Russia for Ukraine regarding Donetsk and the special status of the Russian language. She emphasised the need to know what security guarantees the United States is offering to Ukraine, specifically regarding military support and military presence.
Silina also highlighted the importance of understanding US security guarantees for Europe and how they would be provided in Ukraine. She suggested that the US should be prepared for a sanctions package if talks between Ukraine and Russia fail.
The United States has promised Ukraine military support primarily through material aid, especially air support and weapon supplies. However, they have explicitly excluded the deployment of US ground troops. Instead, they expect European partners to take on responsibilities such as possible military presence and monitoring as part of broader security guarantees to protect Ukraine from renewed Russian aggression after the war.
Silina also emphasised the importance of a trilateral meeting between the president of Ukraine, the president of Russia, and the US president. She suggested that such a meeting could potentially lead to a resolution of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
In a video call with leaders of the Coalition of the Willing on support for Ukraine, Silina stated that the demands by Russia are unacceptable. She also expressed her concern about the uncertainty surrounding a ceasefire or a peace treaty between Ukraine and Russia.
The upcoming meeting between Zelensky and Trump in Washington is scheduled, and it is hoped that it will bring about a significant step towards resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The international community continues to watch developments closely, with hopes for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
