Upgrading the new town - Policy on urban advancement in 1325

In the heart of Germany lies the city of Gießen, a historic gem with a rich past. One of the most significant milestones in its history is the upgrade of the New Town, a event that took place in 1325 and had far-reaching implications.

The document, written in Latin, is the oldest in the city archive and dates back to August 22, 1325. It was granted by Otto, the Landgrave of Marburg and later the ruler of Hesse, who was also known as Landgrave Ludwig IV. This document is considered a treasure due to its historical significance.

The New Town, established outside the city walls, in front of one of the city gates, was intended to be advantageous to its inhabitants. The document from 1325 states that Otto and his officials did not want to burden the new residents with additional duties. This move was a significant milestone for the young city of Gießen, as it stimulated trade and crafts, filled the city's coffers, and promoted immigration.

The upgrade of the quarter in front of the New Town gate was a turning point that elevated the status of the New Town's residents, allowing them to enjoy the same rights as those who lived within the city walls. This privilege granted by Otto was a testament to his vision for the growth and prosperity of Gießen.

The document, extremely thin-skinned and quite small, measuring only eight centimeters high and 15 centimeters wide, has been preserved for 700 years. It has been handled with great care due to its fragile nature, having been housed in various containers and said to be in an iron case in 1822.

Today, this document stands as a testament to Gießen's history and the vision of its early rulers. It serves as a reminder of the city's past and the foundations upon which it was built, inspiring a sense of pride and continuity among its inhabitants.
