Urban community hub now functioning in downtown area
In the heart of Brunswick, a new establishment has emerged, marking a significant milestone for the city's community development. The "SQUAT" (Solidarity Quarter Strengthens Participation) project, run by the association Refugium, has been officially opened as a city-funded neighborhood center.
The neighborhood center, a new addition to the city, is the result of an ongoing process to establish several such facilities in the city area. The development of these facilities is being done with financial support from the city, and various existing facilities in the city are being further developed into neighborhood centers.
The city's Mayor, Dr. Thorsten Kornblum, expressed his gratitude to the association Refugium for their work in setting up the neighborhood center. He wished them success in continuing and further establishing the neighborhood center. The Mayor also highlighted the social commitment shown by the association in this endeavour.
The neighborhood center's opening was an official event, and it is located in the city center. The centre, funded by the city, is part of a politically initiated process aimed at improving the city's recreational and community facilities.
The expansion of neighborhood centers is guided by the "Neighborhood Center Demand Plan" drawn up on behalf of the council. This plan sets priorities for the expansion of neighborhood centers, ensuring they are developed in areas where they are most needed.
The next city-financed recreational center developed by the association Refugium is the expanded A.L.M. Refugium, scheduled to open in 2026. This centre will feature new wellness facilities like indoor and outdoor pools, saunas, and an infrared cabin.
The development of these neighborhood centers is being carried out by free carriers. The process of establishing neighborhood centers is ongoing, and the city continues to support this initiative in its efforts to improve the quality of life for its residents.
