In the heart of Germany, a 22-year-old named Alina Prignitz is battling Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) and Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS). Her daily life is significantly affected, as standing up triggers a rapid increase in her pulse.

Alina's older sister, Tina, has initiated a fundraising campaign to support her medical care and treatment. The goal is to raise 25,000 euros, and as of now, almost 9,000 euros have been donated.

ME/CFS is a neuroimmunological disease that leads to high physical disability. It affects approximately 17 million people worldwide, with around 250,000 estimated to be in Germany before the COVID-19 pandemic, including 40,000 children and adolescents. The disease is characterised by symptoms such as sleep disorders, pain, and orthostatic intolerance.

Currently, treatment for ME/CFS is only symptom-oriented, with no causal therapy found. However, various therapeutic approaches have been tried for Alina, resulting in small improvements.

Research in Germany is focusing on immunological interventions such as plasma cell depletion using the anti-CD38 antibody daratumumab. A pilot trial involving ten female ME/CFS patients showed daratumumab was well tolerated, with clinical improvement observed in six patients. Another promising approach involves the novel drug BC 007 (rovunaptabin), developed by Berlin Cures.

While progress in ME/CFS treatment is being made, no definitive cures or universally effective treatments exist yet. The open Medicine Foundation's TreatME survey, including German patients, identified over 150 treatments with at least moderate patient-perceived benefits, emphasising the need for patient-tailored treatment plans.

In the case of Alina Prignitz, there are no publicly available details about her direct involvement in ME/CFS treatment or research in Germany.

If you wish to support Alina, you can donate to her fundraising campaign. Every contribution brings hope for a better quality of life for this young woman. Let's stand with Alina in her journey towards recovery.
