The Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, has taken a proactive stance in addressing a potential nationwide strike by the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), scheduled for Monday, September 8, 2025. The minister has invited all parties involved to a conciliation meeting, aimed at brokering a resolution that is acceptable to all.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Dingyadi appealed to NUPENG to suspend its planned strike and engage in dialogue, emphasising the importance of a peaceful resolution to avoid potential revenue losses in billions of naira and widespread hardship across the country.

The minister also reached out to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), asking them to withdraw the "red alert" issued in solidarity with the oil workers. Meanwhile, the head of information and public relations for the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Patience Onuobia, has confirmed the upcoming meeting but did not disclose its location.

The petroleum sector, a core part of Nigeria's economy, could be significantly impacted by this strike. Aliko Dangote, the renowned business magnate, has extended an invitation to Dangote Refinery to participate in the negotiations with NUPENG, highlighting the importance of maintaining industry harmony.

However, the minister has remained silent on several other issues, including the DSS writing to Sowore or his tweet, and Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan's suspension expiring. Dingyadi has assured the public that the dispute will be resolved amicably, reiterating his commitment to finding a resolution that benefits all parties involved.

As the date for the conciliation meeting approaches, all eyes are on the Minister of Labour and Employment to navigate this delicate situation and ensure a peaceful resolution that safeguards Nigeria's economy and the wellbeing of its citizens.
