Urges societal transformations - proposing austerity measures
In a significant development, Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz has announced a regulation to provide aid for municipal old debts, set to come into force at the beginning of 2026. This move is part of a broader initiative aimed at reforming social security systems, with the aim of increasing employment and growth.
Merz, who has been advocating for these reforms, believes that the current system, particularly the citizen's income, cannot continue as it is. He stated that the system we have today cannot be afforded with current earnings, and these reforms will require painful decisions and cuts.
The old debt relief for municipalities is also anchored in the coalition agreement, and Merz views this regulation as a small contribution from the federal government to help municipalities that are struggling. He emphasized the need for savings in public budgets, even with the agreed greater borrowing possibilities for defense and infrastructure.
Merz hopes for serious and open discussions with all parties regarding social reforms in the coming weeks and months. He aims to change the current situation and ensure a chance at prosperity and secure jobs for the younger generation.
However, the SPD, the junior partner in the black-red coalition, has criticized Merz's statements on social reforms. They argue that his fierce attacks on the social state do not fit with the factual discussions of the coalition factions. The SPD agrees on the need for social policy reforms but emphasizes the importance of factual discussions instead of seeking quick headlines.
In Würzburg, a coalition government agreed on a work plan after the summer break that includes targeted reforms of social security systems. SPD Bundestag faction's Parliamentary Business Manager, Johannes Fechner, made these comments to the "Tagesspiegel."
Merz also emphasized that health, long-term care, and pension insurance, as achievements of the social state, must remain capable of performance and not be overwhelmed in the future. He asserted that politics is responsible for living beyond our means, and warned that if municipalities are no longer capable of acting and basic public services can no longer be guaranteed, democracy may be affected.
The black-red coalition is planning several legislative projects in the fall to implement these reforms. Merz believes that personal responsibility must be strengthened as part of these reforms, and he urged the Chancellor to take the agreement on factual discussions to heart.
