US urged to rescind visa restrictions towards Palestinians, advocated by the European Union
The European Union (EU), including Germany, has criticized the United States' visa sanctions against the representatives of the Palestinian Authority (PA) and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). The visa restrictions, imposed by the U.S. State Department, affect Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and numerous other individuals, as well as the PLO.
The meeting of foreign ministers from the 26 EU member states, including Germany, held in Copenhagen, Denmark, was a platform for this collective expression of disapproval. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas urged a reconsideration of the U.S. visa sanctions during the meeting.
The visa sanctions could potentially impact the attendance of certain individuals at the UN General Assembly, where recognition of a Palestinian state is planned. Several countries, including France, Canada, and Australia, are among those planning to recognize a Palestinian state at the upcoming UN General Assembly in New York.
Recognition of a Palestinian state is a significant step towards resolving the long-standing conflict in the Middle East. The official Palestinian Authority representation to the United Nations is exempt from the visa restrictions, ensuring their participation in the UN General Assembly.
However, the visa sanctions may prevent other key figures from attending, potentially disrupting the planned recognition of a Palestinian state. The UN General Assembly is scheduled to take place in New York in September, with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas expected to call for formal recognition in his speech, supported by some European countries like France, Ireland, and Spain.
Countries such as France, Canada, and Belgium have announced their intention to declare recognition of a Palestinian state at the upcoming UN General Assembly. This move is supported by some European countries, including France, Ireland, and Spain, who are expected to join the initiative.
The U.S. visa sanctions, while intended to pressure the Palestinian Authority, have instead sparked a wave of criticism from the international community. The EU's stance on the matter is one of disapproval and a call for reconsideration, reflecting a global concern for a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
