USC quarterbacks Jayden Maiava and Husan Longstreet spearhead dominant performance, securing a 73-13 victory for USC against Missouri State.
In the highly-anticipated season opener for Southern California, the Trojans showcased an impressive offensive performance, securing a resounding 73-13 victory over Missouri State. This was the highest-scoring game for USC since 1930, marking a significant milestone in the team's history.
The game began with a bang, as Eli Sanders scored the first touchdown for USC on a 73-yard screen pass reception midway through the first half. Missouri State responded with a field goal, taking an early lead before the Trojans stormed back.
Making his USC debut, Husan Longstreet, a top prep passer last season, scored a touchdown on his first drive but fumbled on his second. Despite this early hiccup, Longstreet bounced back, completing all nine of his passes and rushing for two touchdowns in the second half. His first touchdown pass was thrown in the fourth quarter.
Longstreet engineered four more scoring drives, including a 17-yard TD run and a TD pass to Carson Tabaracci. Three other players, Waymond Jordan, Bryan Jackson, and King Miller, also rushed for touchdowns for USC. Lake McRee caught a 64-yard touchdown pass, and Eli Sanders turned a screen pass into a 73-yard TD during the first half.
The Trojans' offensive prowess was evident as they scored on 10 of their first 11 drives and didn't punt. USC amassed a total of 602 yards, demonstrating their dominance on the field.
Defensively, Bishop Fitzgerald, an NC State transfer safety making his USC debut, returned an interception 39 yards for a TD, further bolstering the Trojans' lead.
Jayden Maiava passed for 295 yards and two touchdowns in the first half for Missouri State. Despite their valiant efforts, the Bears struggled to keep up with the relentless USC offense.
Looking ahead, USC hosts Georgia Southern on Sept. 6, while Missouri State visits Marshall on the same day. As the college football season continues to unfold, USC's impressive performance against Missouri State serves as a promising indicator of things to come.
Longstreet, who grew up in nearby Inglewood and admires USC Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams, will undoubtedly be a key player to watch as the Trojans aim for further success this season. He chose to work with head coach Lincoln Riley, who has coached three Heisman winners and second-place finisher Jalen Hurts.
With a strong start to the season under their belts, the USC Trojans are poised to make a significant impact in the college football landscape.
