European Camping Trends: A Look at the Top Destinations and New Hotspots

Camping holidays continue to be a popular choice for travellers across Europe, with many countries seeing significant increases in overnight stays. According to recent data, France remains the most sought-after destination for camping, with over 141 million overnight stays.

However, there are several countries that are giving France a run for its money. Spain follows closely with around 48 million overnight stays and a slight increase, while Sweden holds the highest number of overnight stays in Northern Europe. Norway is not far behind, also making it to the top three.

Among the new camping hotspots in Europe are Denmark, Luxembourg, and Bornholm (a Danish island). These smaller European countries have seen a significant increase in overnight stays for camping holidays in recent years. Denmark, in particular, follows Sweden in terms of overnight stays in Northern Europe, and both countries have reported record camping bookings and rising tourist interest in nature-based accommodations.

Ireland has also experienced a remarkable increase of over 40 percent in overnight stays, making it another popular camping destination. Albania is known for its unspoiled beaches, warm hospitality, and a growing number of modern camping sites, attracting an increase of over 21 percent.

Not all countries have seen positive growth in camping tourism, though. Italy, the Netherlands, and Croatia have recorded noticeable losses, while Poland has seen a nearly 20 percent increase. Bulgaria has also increased by around 14.5 percent, offering opportunities for camping along the Black Sea coast and in the mountains.

For those planning a motorhome trip, there are direct connections from northern French ports to Ireland, with crossings to Cork, Rosslare, or Dublin taking about 18 hours. International expert Anne-Katrin Schwanitz discusses various topics related to safe travels with a motorhome in a video, including proper loading, tire care, vehicle checks, safety with gas bottles and cookers, fire protection, finding the right campsite, and insurance for van life.

Camping holidays in Poland offer diverse nature, good infrastructure, and affordable prices, making it an attractive destination for many. Scandinavian countries are particularly attractive for environmentally conscious campers due to their emphasis on sustainability.

Europe recorded around 405 million tourist overnight stays in camping, a slight decrease of 2.5 percent compared to the previous year. Despite this, camping remains one of the most popular forms of travel on the continent.
