Valdes-Scantling explains the reasons behind signing with the San Francisco 49ers instead of joining forces with Aaron Rodgers on the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Marquez Valdes-Scantling, an eight-year veteran in the NFL, has made a move to the San Francisco 49ers' practice squad. The wide receiver had the option to join either the 49ers or the Pittsburgh Steelers, but chose the former.

Valdes-Scantling's decision was not personal, but based on business considerations. His college coach's words, "It's never as good as it is and it's never as bad as it seems," have stuck with him, and he maintains a consistent mindset, not getting too high or too low.

The 49ers are starting the regular season without top wideout Brandon Aiyuk due to a season-ending knee injury in the previous year. Fellow starting wideout Jauan Jennings is dealing with an injury and has recently requested a trade. This presents an opportunity for Valdes-Scantling to add to his list of accomplishments in San Francisco.

Klay Kubiak, the offensive coordinator for the 49ers, leads a balanced offense focused on creating good situations for their quarterback and running backs. His offensive system resembles Klint Kubiak's Seattle Seahawks scheme as both emphasize a balanced attack and share roots in the West Coast offense. However, Klay adapts to his players more, while Klint leans more on a run game with heavy use of outside zone and under-center plays.

Valdes-Scantling has a good relationship with Aaron Rodgers, having helped him win his fourth MVP award in 2021 and his third MVP award in 2020. He also caught passes from three-time Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes in Kansas City, where he won back-to-back Super Bowls in 2022. In 2020, Valdes-Scantling led the NFL in yards per reception.

There's a chance that Valdes-Scantling could get elevated to the 49ers' active roster sooner rather than later. As the Steelers' receiving corps is currently healthy, Valdes-Scantling saw this move as an opportunity to learn the 49ers' offensive system and the current situation at receiver.

Valdes-Scantling's motto is to stay even-keeled, a mindset that has served him well throughout his NFL career. As he begins his journey with the 49ers, he remains focused on his goal of adding to his list of accomplishments in San Francisco.
