Valkyries triumph over Mystics with Leite contributing 19 points from the bench, winning 99-62.
The Golden State Valkyries continued their impressive form on Sunday, defeating the Washington Mystics 99-62 in a lopsided contest. The victory marks the Valkyries' sixth win in their last eight games, as they strive to secure the eighth and final berth in the WNBA playoffs.
The Valkyries started the game strong, capitalising on the Mystics' early struggles. Washington began the game 3 for 16 and 1 of 9 on 3s, falling behind 19-8 after the first quarter. The Mystics' woes continued in the first half, with nine turnovers leading to 17 points for the Valkyries.
Despite the Mystics' struggles, the Valkyries maintained their composure, shooting an impressive 53.1% in the first half and finishing the game with a 55% shooting percentage from the floor. Carla Leite, who had been nursing a tender right ankle, contributed 19 points and six assists, while Janelle Salaun added 20 points and six rebounds. Kaila Charles and Veronica Burton also chipped in with 16 and 15 points respectively.
Coach Natalie Nakase, who leads the Valkyries, had an opportunity to mix and match with her team up big. She was pleased with her team's performance, stating, "We've been working hard on our offensive and defensive schemes, and it's great to see them paying off."
The Mystics, on the other hand, are currently on a six-game losing streak. Sug Sutton scored 17 points and Lucy Olsen added 13 points for the Mystics, but it wasn't enough to prevent the defeat.
The Valkyries will look to continue their winning ways when they host the Indiana Fever on Sunday, while the Mystics will return home to conclude their three-game road trip against the Los Angeles Sparks.
