Van Gogh Museum Celebrates Artist's Friendship With Postman Roulin
A new exhibition at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam celebrates the friendship between Vincent van Gogh and Joseph Roulin, a postman who became one of the artist's closest friends. The exhibition, 'Van Gogh and the Roulins: Together Again at Last', brings together 15 portraits of the Roulin family, including the iconic 'La Berceuse', painted five times by Van Gogh.
The exhibition challenges the common perception of Van Gogh as a solitary and tormented figure. It highlights his deep friendship with Roulin, who sat for him in exchange for meals and drinks at the local café. The two men became close in 1888 when Van Gogh, then living in Arles, met Roulin.
Van Gogh saw the Roulins as an exemplary married couple and painted Augustine Roulin, Roulin's wife, as 'La Berceuse' five times. Roulin, in turn, cared for Van Gogh after he cut off his ear in 1888, visiting him daily during his two-week stay in hospital. Despite Roulin's transfer to Marseille in January 1889, the two men maintained their friendship through letters. Roulin continued to encourage Van Gogh to paint and sent him regards until Van Gogh's death in 1890. Gauguin even telegraphed the events after Van Gogh brought the bleeding artist home following an incident.
The exhibition also features photographs, paintings, and a recreation of the Yellow House, where Van Gogh lived and worked. It offers a unique insight into the artist's life and his relationships with those around him. By bringing together these 15 portraits for the first time, the exhibition provides a fresh perspective on Van Gogh's art and his enduring friendship with Roulin.
