Vandalism at the local graveyard
Vandalism and Theft at Weilerswist Cemetery
A disturbing act of vandalism and multiple thefts occurred at the cemetery on Bliesheimer Street in Weilerswist over the weekend. The vandalism continued from Saturday, August 16 at 8 a.m., through to Monday, August 18 at 8 a.m.
The perpetrators gained entry to the cemetery by breaking a metal lock on the entrance gate. Upon entering, they damaged two wheelbarrows in the entrance area by cutting the securing chains and causing significant damage.
The vandalism extended to the graves themselves, with several being desecrated. Two grave figures were stolen during the incident, and a metal cross was removed from the base of a grave. A wooden fence section was also pulled out from the ground.
Despite the investigations initiated by the Criminal Police, the identity of the individuals responsible for the vandalism and theft remains unknown. The total property damage from the incident amounts to a low four-digit Euro figure.
This unfortunate event has left the community of Weilerswist saddened and outraged. The cemetery, a place of peace and tranquility, has been violated, and the loss of the grave figures and the metal cross is a painful reminder of the disrespect shown.
As the investigation continues, we hope that the perpetrators will be brought to justice, and the community can find solace in coming together during this difficult time.
