Vegas outpaces regular monthly tourist numbers in the second year of Formula One hosting
Las Vegas Sees Mixed Results in Tourism Statistics for November 2024
Las Vegas, the entertainment capital of the world, has released its tourism statistics for the November 2024 calendar, revealing a mix of positive and negative trends.
The city saw an increase in overall visitor numbers, with 3.31 million people visiting, a 0.6% increase over the 3.29 million in the November 2024 calendar of the previous year. This growth can be attributed to the second annual Formula 1 race held on the Las Vegas Strip, which attracted a large influx of fans and boosted the visitation numbers.
However, the convention attendance for the November 2024 calendar was down 8.4% year-over-year, with 548,200 visitors. The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) cited a decrease in churn of mid-size and smaller meetings for this drop.
The average daily traffic on all major highways was up 0.5%, while the Harry Reid International Airport handled 4.73 million people, a decrease of 2.1% compared to 4.83 million in the November 2024 calendar of the previous year. Two percent fewer people crossed the Nevada-California border on I-15 in the November 2024 calendar, a decrease of 0.6% for the year.
In the hotel industry, revenue per room in the November 2024 calendar came in at $162, a 20.8% decrease from $204 compared to the November 2024 calendar of the previous year. The monthly average daily rate in the November 2024 calendar was the second highest for the month of November at $199, but a significant drop from $249 in the November 2024 calendar of the previous year. The strength during the November 2024 calendar was weekend occupancy, which was up 0.4 points over the previous year.
Strip average daily rates were $212.49, down from $270.19 in the November 2024 calendar of the previous year. Downtown occupancy was 70.2%, significantly higher than the 65.6% a year ago, while Strip occupancy was 84.3%, down from 85.2% a year ago.
International travelers saw a 16.2% increase in the November 2024 calendar, while domestic travel was down 3.3%. For the year, domestic travel is up 0.8%, and international travel at 3.3 million is up 13.6%. The United States, specifically Nevada, hosted an F1 race on the Strip in the November 2024 calendar, which may have contributed to the increase in international travel.
The LVCVA released the visitor numbers ahead of the November gaming revenue numbers, providing a snapshot of the city's tourism industry for the month. For the year 2024, visitation in Las Vegas is running 2.2% higher than 2023 with 38.2 million visitors. These numbers suggest a continued recovery from the pandemic's impact on the tourism industry.
