Vehicle Debut Happening Online in North America Amid 'Stay-at-Home' Restrictions (Presenting the 'New Sienna' and 'New Venza')
In the face of unprecedented challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Toyota Motor North America (TMNA) has demonstrated resilience and adaptability by unveiling two new models, the 'Sienna' and 'Venza' (known as Harrier in the Japanese market), through an online video streaming event.
The decision to forego a physical reveal was not taken lightly. With the rapid spread of the virus, TMNA found no prospect of safely presenting the new products in person. Instead, they chose to film the launch video at their headquarters in Plano, Texas, and the home of Jack Hollis, Group Vice President and General Manager of Toyota Division.
The all-new Sienna was filmed in an empty atmosphere since all TMNA employees were working from home. On the other hand, the Venza was parked and covered in front of Hollis' garage, where he unveiled the vehicle. Bob Carter, Executive Vice President of Sales, hosted the reveal of the all-new Sienna from the TMNA headquarters.
The online product reveal was a response to the postponement of the New York Auto Show, which was officially announced on March 10. Despite the stay-at-home order, TMNA decided to change their approach, seeing it as a golden opportunity to connect with more people.
Jack Hollis expressed his enthusiasm about the digital reveal, stating it gave viewers a chance to go deeper into Toyota's messages. He was joined by Toyota President Akio Toyoda, who emphasised the importance of thanking healthcare workers, keeping the business running, and preparing to lead the economy recovery during these challenging times.
This trend of online launches could be a sign of a 'new normal' for Toyota, which will be closely monitored by Toyota Times. TMNA had multiple versions of the online launch plans and may become more flexible and innovative in launching vehicles in the future.
Despite the challenges, TMNA set the shooting date for the online reveal in May, with the message intended for all team members globally, including those in North America. This 'From home' new product reveal was special due to the restrictions caused by the 'Stay home' situation.
As we move forward, it's clear that Toyota is adapting to the changing landscape and embracing the digital age. Whether this is a temporary measure or a permanent shift remains to be seen, but one thing is certain - Toyota is committed to delivering innovative and exciting new models to its customers, no matter the circumstances.
