In the prestigious Venice Film Festival, a moving tribute to the late British singer-songwriter Marianne Faithfull is taking centre stage. The film, titled "Broken English," is playing out of competition, meaning it is not in the running for the coveted Golden Lion award.

"Broken English" reappraises Faithfull's life and career, offering a fresh perspective on a legendary figure. Tilda Swinton takes on the role of the ministry overseer, while George MacKay portrays the record keeper and interviewer.

The film is a unique blend of documentary and fiction, aiming to redress Faithfull's often distorted public image. It makes heavy use of archive material, including interviews with journalists, and features Faithfull's final musical performance. She sings "Misunderstanding" from her 2018 album Negative Capability, accompanied by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis.

Despite being named after Faithfull's comeback album from 1979, the film is set in the fictional Ministry of Not Forgetting. This setting is part of a larger project by the film's co-directors, Jane Pollard and Iain Forsyth, to prevent misrepresentation of artists' legacies by AI.

Pollard also established the purpose of the Ministry of Not Forgetting to be the prevention of misrepresentation of artists' legacies by AI. This is particularly relevant given that Faithfull, often remembered as Mick Jagger's former girlfriend, has released over 30 albums in her own right.

Sadly, Faithfull passed away during the production of "Broken English," but the directors assure that the finished work reflects 99% of their intended vision. George MacKay, who was present during Faithfull's final musical performance, found it incredibly moving, given her health condition and discomfort during filming.

Iain Forsyth has shared that many obituaries about Faithfull were headlined "Mick Jagger's ex-girlfriend dies," which underscores the need for a film like "Broken English" to reassert Faithfull's significance as a solo artist.

In a poignant moment, Jane Pollard stated, "If left to AI, broken data will just stay broken." With "Broken English," the directors have certainly mended some of the broken data surrounding Marianne Faithfull's legacy, offering a heartfelt tribute to a truly remarkable artist.
