Government Housing Construction: A Comparative Analysis

The current Indian government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has made significant strides in housing construction since taking office in 2014. According to official records, a total of 111.44 lakh houses have been constructed in rural and urban areas over their first four years (2014-15 to 2017-18).

This average of more than 27.86 lakh houses per year is higher than the average construction rate under the UPA 2 government, which was 24.7 lakh houses per year. The current government has also constructed one crore more houses than the UPA government in the last four years.

However, claims made by the Prime Minister regarding the number of houses constructed by the UPA government during their last four years have been found to be false. In reality, the UPA government constructed 89.65 lakh houses, not 25 lakh as stated. Similarly, the claim that the current government has constructed 1.25 crore houses in their last four years is a misrepresentation of the actual figure, which is closer to 1 crore houses.

The rural housing program in India began with the Indira Awaas Yojana (IAY) in 1996 and has been re-structured into Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana - Grameen (PMAY-G) in April 2016. The urban equivalent of the scheme was earlier known as the Rajiv Awas Yojana and has been restructured into the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana - Urban.

The various housing programs by the Indian government since independence include the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) launched in 2005, Rajiv Awas Yojana (RAY) started in 2009, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) launched in 2015 aiming for "Housing for All" by 2022, and earlier programs like Indira Awaas Yojana (IAY) for rural housing since 1985.

Recently, Prime Minister Modi addressed a gathering to mark the Grihapravesh (housewarming) of PMAY-G beneficiaries in Maharashtra, reiterating the government's commitment to providing affordable housing for all. The Prime Minister also mentioned that the number of houses constructed in the last six months by the current government might be closer to the 1.25 crore houses as stated, although the exact figure is yet to be confirmed.

In conclusion, the current Indian government has made substantial progress in housing construction, surpassing the rate of the previous government. However, it is important to maintain factual accuracy in statements regarding housing construction figures.
