Verserealm by Tomaso Binga
In the heart of North Rome, not far from Vigna Clara, lies the home-studio of a remarkable artist – Tomaso Binga. Born in 1931, Binga, whose real name is Bianca Pucciarelli Menna, has made a significant impact on the art world as an artist-symbol of visual and sound poetry.
Binga's artistic journey began in a unique manner. Her initial creations were accidental, involving polystyrene objects and found trash items. These early works were initially given as Christmas gifts to friends. It wasn't until a guest, a critic, discovered her art and suggested an exhibition that Binga's work started to gain recognition.
The Cultural Association Lavatoio Contumaciale, founded by Binga in 1974, was initially her home-studio. Dedicated to promoting the arts, the association later served as an archive and location for the Menna/Binga collection. The current headquarters of the Menna/Binga Archive is where the Lavatoio Contumaciale used to be.
One of Binga's most renowned works is "Oblò," which was acquired in 2020 with POC Region Campania funds and is now part of the Fondazione Donnaregina-Museo Madre collection. Another notable piece is the performance, "I Write to You Only on Sunday," created as a liberatory act, making visible the feminine memory of the masculine attitude to impose silence on them.
"I Write to You Only on Sunday" is a real diary of minute, delicate, and pregnant confessions. The performance features 52 intimate and universal epistolary communications. It was created between 1977 and 1978, and each visitor to the performance can identify themselves in their own way, thinking nostalgically of a world where art was truly a being together.
Binga identifies as neither male nor female, but as the body of the word. Her artistic universe was created through the word. Her work, including "Oblò" and "I Write to You Only on Sunday," addresses the condition of women and the growth of consumer society.
Binga's first exhibition was held in a remote village with friends, around eight in the evening. The exhibition was a significant milestone in her career, marking the beginning of her journey as a celebrated artist.
Tomaso Binga's legacy continues to inspire and influence the art world. Her unique approach to art, her bold statements, and her commitment to promoting the arts make her an artist-symbol that will be remembered for years to come.
