Vietnam maintains leading position in regional sugar production

The Sugarcane and Sugar Association (VSSA) recently held a conference in Hà Nội to review the 2024-2025 crop and discuss plans for the upcoming 2025-2026 season.

In the previous season, Vietnam's sugar mills completed crushing by June, producing over 1.266 million tonnes of sugar. This represents a 14.2% increase compared to the previous season, with the country maintaining its regional lead in sugar productivity, reaching 6.69 tonnes of sugar per hectare. Cane output for the season was nearly 12.429 million tonnes, an increase from about 11.205 million tonnes in the previous season. The total harvested cane area for the season was 189,360 hectares, an increase from 163,019 hectares in the previous season.

During the conference, Nguyễn Văn Lộc, Chairman of the VSSA, reported that Vietnam outpaced other major sugar producers such as Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines in the 2024-2025 crop.

For the 2025-2026 crop, the focus will be on improved cultivation techniques for higher yields and better quality. The association anticipates 25 mills to remain in operation for the season, with the same number as last season. The combined design capacity of the mills for the season is 124,000 tonnes of cane per day.

Cane prices for the 2025-2026 crop are expected to average VNĐ1.2-1.3 million (US$45-49) per tonne. The projected output for the season represents an 8.24% increase year-on-year compared to the previous season, with more than 13.34 million tonnes of cane and over 1.37 million tonnes of sugar.

The sugar industry in Vietnam continues to be a significant source of livelihoods, providing employment for over 225,000 farming households. The industry's continued success is expected to sustain the rising cane and sugar production trend over the past five consecutive seasons.

However, the query regarding the specific locations of the 25 sugar mills to be operational for the 2025-2026 sugarcane sowing season was not addressed in the provided search results.

As the sugar industry in Vietnam continues to grow, it is expected to play a crucial role in the country's economic development and food security.
