The Minnesota Vikings have made a move in their quarterback room, signing Carson Wentz to serve as a backup quarterback. This comes after the team cleared a spot by trading Sam Howell to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Wentz, who spent seven seasons as a starter in the NFL before shifting into a backup role, will now provide a veteran presence in the Minnesota Vikings' quarterback room. The second-year QB out of Michigan will benefit from Wentz's experience, with the veteran quarterback set to mentor him.

Wentz spent the 2024 season behind Patrick Mahomes in Kansas City, and before that, he was replaced by Jalen Hurts as the starter when with the Philadelphia Eagles. Additionally, he has served as a backup or been replaced by other quarterbacks during his tenure with the Colts, Washington Commanders, and Rams across his NFL career. Most recently, the Minnesota Vikings signed Wentz to be the backup behind rookie J.J. McCarthy.

J.J. McCarthy will remain the starting quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings, with Wentz expected to serve as a backup. The trade of Sam Howell has opened up a quarterback spot on the Minnesota Vikings' roster, and Wentz's arrival fills that void.

Howell moves back to the NFC East after his time in Minnesota. He started his career in Washington before spending a season in Seattle and this preseason in Minnesota. Tanner McKee joins Howell in the Philadelphia Eagles' quarterback room, as the Eagles sent a fifth and seventh round pick to the Minnesota Vikings as part of the trade.

The Philadelphia Eagles have their starter in Jalen Hurts, and with Kenny Pickett, last year's backup in Philadelphia, signing with the Browns, Wentz will likely be the primary backup for the Eagles.

Wentz worked out for the Minnesota Vikings on Monday, and the team was impressed enough to make the move to bring him in. The Vikings sent a sixth round pick to the Philadelphia Eagles as part of the trade. Wentz is expected to serve as a mentor for the second-year QB out of Michigan in Minnesota, providing valuable insights and guidance as he grows in his NFL career.
