Villagers bought for £50k, now struggle with dilapidated structures beyond repair

In a charming corner of Deux-Sèvres, France, Tony and Terry, a furniture-restoring couple from Gloucester, have embarked on an ambitious project to revive the crumbling village of Chicheville. The quaint hamlet, consisting of three cottages, a pig sty, a barn, and a small wood, was purchased by the duo for approximately £51,000 - less expensive than some luxury cars.

Tony and Terry, who have been concerned about the loss of family history and the potential disappearance of the village, have only been able to afford basic repairs due to a lack of cash. However, they are determined to protect and restore Chicheville, transforming it from a pile of stones into a thriving oasis.

The main cottage, once the heart of the village and home to farmers, is the couple's primary focus. The cosy sitting room within the cottage has been created and will serve as a cocktail lounge, while Terry plans to keep many of the home's original features, such as a terracotta pot built into the walls. The restoration process so far has resulted in an inviting and homely atmosphere, providing a glimpse of the village's past charm.

Despite the financial challenges, the couple is against modern methods used in house restoration. Instead, they prefer to maintain the authenticity of the village, preserving its rich history for future generations. Tony, in particular, is adamant about the importance of rescuing houses before they disappear, expressing his concerns about the rest of the hamlet.

Tony and Terry are currently waiting for their home in the UK to sell, which they hope will provide an influx of cash to further their restoration efforts. The cost of living crisis in the UK has made this a difficult time for the couple, but they remain steadfast in their determination to complete the project.

As they continue their work, Tony and Terry are creating a sanctuary in the heart of France, ensuring that the village of Chicheville will not be forgotten. Their dedication to preserving the village's history and character is a testament to their love for this unique and enchanting place.
