Vinyl devotees now have a sleek, aluminum sanctuary for their revered collections, thanks to a redesign by Waiting for Ideas.

Waiting for Ideas Unveils Minimalist PP-1 Turntable

Paris-based studio Waiting for Ideas has introduced a unique and intriguing piece of audio equipment - the PP-1 turntable. This minimalist design, available for more information on their website (waiting-for-ideas.com), is set to redefine the way we experience vinyl records.

The PP-1 turntable is a testament to simplicity, with controls and outputs pared back to the bare minimum. Its design reduces vinyl to its essential essence as a physical object, making it an appealing choice for those who appreciate the raw beauty of analogue music.

The concealed mechanism of the PP-1 turntable is designed to take vinyl back to its roots, allowing users to feel the music in a profound way. The turntable's mechanism is capable of detecting whether a 33 or 45 record is being played, although the method of detection remains a mystery.

One of the standout features of the PP-1 is its platter, which is countersunk into the aluminium body, making any disc appear flush with the surface. The turntable lacks a conventional tone arm; instead, the needle is set below the platter, protected by a cover that opens when a record is placed on the platter. This means the disc must be placed down face up.

Waiting for Ideas has managed to distil the most minimal form of analogue music through the PP-1 turntable. The studio, established by Jean-Baptiste Anotin in 2021, has also designed a pair of accompanying speakers for the PP-1, which have an identical footprint. These speakers are fully wrapped in black fabric, providing a contrast to the raw aluminium of the turntable.

The studio has worked on retail space projects for Lacoste, Reebok, and Shinzo, and artist collaborations with Iris Marchand, Mathilde Hiley, and Pierre Vaillant. The PP-1 turntable also sends out a daily digest of inspiration, escapism, and design stories from around the world via its newsletter.

In a world where technology often overshadows the essence of music, the PP-1 turntable is a breath of fresh air. It's an object for those who don't just want to listen to music, but to feel it. Whether stacked like a totem pole or separated for conventional stereo sound, these speakers are set to become the centrepiece of any music lover's collection.
