In the heart of Berlin, an unauthorized gathering near Hackescher Market on Thursday evening, in the context of the Middle East conflict, ended in a physical altercation between police officers and pro-Palestinian protesters.

According to reports from the German Press Agency, the Irish Foreign Ministry was informed about the incident. The Irish Ambassador, Maeve Collins, along with other high-ranking officials, have since contacted German authorities to express their concern.

The incident, which was captured on video footage, shows a Berlin police officer striking an Irish woman twice in the face. The woman sustained severe injuries, including a possible broken arm and bleeding from the nose. According to the Irish broadcaster RTE, the Irish protest group "Irish Bloc Berlin" stated that the woman would need surgery.

The Berlin police have acknowledged being aware of the video footage and have provisionally detained 94 people in connection with the incident. The officer involved in the incident has been identified, and the behaviour is currently under review to determine if it was proportionate.

During the operation, there were incidents of verbal aggression, physical attacks, and acts of resistance against and on police officers. As a result, Berlin police initiated 96 investigations, including for the use of symbols of unconstitutional and terrorist organizations, physical attack on and resistance against law enforcement officers.

In addition, investigations for insults, bodily harm, and suspected illegal residence are also underway. The lack of an identified assembly leadership led to the dispersal of the gathering.

The officer's name has not been publicly disclosed at this time. The incident is currently under investigation by the Berlin police, and no investigation against the officer has been initiated yet.

Approximately 100 people were moving back and forth between Rosenthaler Platz and Hackescher Market during the unauthorized gathering. The unauthorized gathering was dispersed by Berlin police on the same evening.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining peace and order during protests, and the need for all parties involved to exercise restraint and respect for each other's rights.
