Volcano in Alaska Erupts, Causing Large Ash Plume and Disrupting Airline Traffic
Mount Pavlof Erupts on Alaska Peninsula
On Sunday, 03.28.2016, Mount Pavlof on the Alaska Peninsula erupted, sending an ash cloud soaring up to 20,000 feet (6,096 meters) high. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) responded by issuing a "red" aviation alert, requiring flights to be re-routed.
The seismic data showed the intensity of the eruption ramped up quite abruptly, a pattern not uncommon for Mount Pavlof, which is known for having a quick onset to eruptions and may not always give long precursory signals.
Jessica Larsen, coordinating scientist with the University of Alaska Geophysical Institute, confirmed the eruption and stated that the 20,000-foot ash cloud is not unusual for Pavlof. In the past, ash plumes from Pavlof's eruptions, including those in May-November 2014, have triggered aviation warnings.
The ash cloud from the eruption could affect local, regional, polar routes, and cargo flights from Anchorage. The FAA's aviation alert is a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of aircraft and passengers.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) is responsible for monitoring Mount Pavlof volcano on the Alaska Peninsula. The highest recorded ash plume from Mount Pavlof was 49,000 feet high.
The closest residential area to Mount Pavlof is Cold Bay, located 37 miles (60 km) southwest of the volcano. Photos on the Alaska Volcano Observatory website show the plume from the eruption towering over Mount Pavlof.
Such eruption events can last for weeks or months, and the observatory will continue to closely monitor Mount Pavlof. The public is advised to stay informed through the Alaska Volcano Observatory's website for updates on the volcanic activity.
