Volkswagen halts production of convertibles until the end of the internal combustion engine era.
In the bustling atmosphere of the Munich motor show, Andreas Mindt, the design chief of Volkswagen, shared some insightful comments about the future of the automotive industry.
Mindt highlighted a challenge that the industry is currently facing: maintaining a double portfolio of electric and combustion cars. This double portfolio, he explained, is causing a strain on investment and time management.
The decline of internal combustion engine (ICE) models is expected to lead to a shift in the industry towards an increase in derivatives like convertibles. However, Mindt stated that Volkswagen is unlikely to reintroduce convertibles or other derivatives into its line-up. Instead, the company is focusing on maintaining its current line-up of both petrol and electric models.
The software update challenge is a result of the double portfolio requirement in the automotive industry. Mindt suggested that the need for software updates for both electric and combustion vehicles is a factor in the lack of convertibles currently.
Despite this, Mindt predicts an increase in derivatives like convertibles once the industry no longer requires a double portfolio. This prediction is not limited to Volkswagen but applies to the entire automotive industry.
Interestingly, the T-Roc crossover, which had a drop-top version in its previous generation, is not currently offered with a convertible version. No plans for a new convertible model have been announced by Volkswagen.
Despite the lack of convertibles in Volkswagen's current line-up, Mindt's comments indicate a future potential for an increase in convertible models once the industry no longer needs to maintain a double portfolio.
In conclusion, the automotive industry is facing a significant challenge in managing a double portfolio of electric and combustion cars. However, as the industry transitions away from ICE models, Mindt predicts a future increase in derivatives like convertibles. While Volkswagen currently offers both petrol and electric models, no plans for a new convertible model have been announced.
