Volunteer Program Kickoff in Alzey on Its Inaugural Day
Volunteer Day Celebrates Rhineland-Palatinate's Helping Spirit
This year, the Volunteer Day event is taking place in Alzey, a town in Rhineland-Palatinate, a region known for its strong commitment to volunteering. The event, which honours volunteers from various aid and rescue organisations, is expected to attract around 10,000 visitors.
Minister President Alexander Schweitzer (SPD) officially opened the day, emphasising Rhineland-Palatinate's reputation as a region that takes care of each other. This sentiment is reflected in the region's high engagement in clubs, with approximately 10 clubs per 1,000 inhabitants, according to Schweitzer.
The "Blue Light Mile" in Alzey will host a display of equipment and vehicles from aid and rescue organisations such as the fire department, German Red Cross (DRK), and Technical Relief Agency (THW). This provides an opportunity for guests to learn about the vital work these organisations carry out.
The "Marketplace of Volunteering" in Alzey will showcase 55 volunteer organisations across different areas, including culture, environmental protection, and youth work. These organisations play a crucial role in tasks such as firefighting, rescue operations, training young people, caring for seniors, distributing food at food banks, and clearing rubble.
Rhineland-Palatinate is home to approximately 1.5 million volunteers who contribute their time and efforts without pay. The region also has the most honorary mayors in Germany, according to a study by the Ruhr University Bochum.
In the evening, the show "Honor Matter 2025" will be broadcast, presenting five awards to volunteers from Rhineland-Palatinate. The identities of the five awardees are not yet publicly available.
Volunteers in Rhineland-Palatinate are credited with helping make the country work. Their dedication and selflessness are a testament to the region's strong community spirit. The Volunteer Day event is a chance to celebrate and recognise these unsung heroes.
