Walmart terminates employment for 1,500 workers at an Atlanta-based fulfillment center
In a significant move, Walmart has announced that its Fulton County facility in Georgia will be converted to support its Walmart Fulfillment Services business, which assists marketplace sellers. This decision comes as the retail giant has been ramping up its online strategies, following the surge in online sales since the facility was opened in 2015.
The Fulton County facility, which has played a crucial role in Walmart's logistics, is now undergoing a transformation. Walmart's acquisition of e-grocery automation firm Alert Innovation and an 11.1% stake in AI company Symbotic are likely to play a key role in this transition.
However, some analysts have expressed concerns about Walmart's online strategies. Nick Egelanian, president of retail estate firm Siteworks, questions whether the downsizing of the Fulton County facility is a sign that Walmart is rethinking its online ambitions. He also believes that Walmart is losing market share in all of its businesses while e-commerce is draining resources.
Despite these concerns, Walmart's online sales have continued to soar. In 2021, Walmart.com revenue rose by 11% compared to 2020. This growth is reminiscent of the strategy adopted by rival Amazon, which has leveraged ancillary businesses like marketplace fulfillment services to create lucrative revenue streams outside of its direct retail operations.
Amazon, too, has been making adjustments to its fulfillment strategy. The tech giant has reduced its fulfillment capacity by canceling or delaying the construction of dozens of warehouses. However, it has continued to rely heavily on its third-party marketplace, ceding much of its online retail to these sellers.
As for Walmart, the company has signed an agreement to deploy Symbotic's end-to-end automation system across all 42 of its regional distribution centers. This move is expected to streamline Walmart's logistics operations and support its growing marketplace business.
However, it's not clear whether these changes will be enough to turn a profit or leverage Walmart's marketplace fulfillment services to enter more profitable businesses. As the retail giant navigates this new phase, it remains to be seen how these strategies will shape Walmart's future in the competitive online retail landscape.
In a related development, Walmart is laying off 1,458 employees at the Fulton County facility, effective December 2. A Walmart spokesperson didn't immediately return a request for comment about why the closure or layoffs are necessary at the Fulton County facility.
This news comes as a blow to the local community, but it is a testament to the ever-evolving nature of the retail industry, particularly in the digital age. As Walmart continues to adapt and innovate, it will be interesting to see how these changes impact the company's performance and its position in the market.
